Healthcare and medical services in Gävleborg

In Sweden healthcare, medical services and dental care are available through the county councils and private care providers.

In our county, Gävleborg County Council is responsible for healthcare and medical services, and the costs of providing them are covered by the county-council tax and charges to patients.

Many professions contribute to good healthcare and medical services. As a patient, you are very much involved in deciding what form of care you need. Patients see nurses and doctors specialising in different branches of medicine, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, medical social workers, psychologists and other professionals.

Healthcare consists largely of preventive measures. For these, you are invited to undergo various checks and investigations, for example in the child and women’s healthcare services.

Medical services involve measures to investigate and treat ill-health.

Healthcare and medical services are classified as emergency, primary and specialist care:

Emergency care is provided in the event of life-threatening illness or injury. In case of need, the number to call is always 112.
Primary care, available at the local health centre, is the basis of all other care.
Specialist care is provided at hospitals on an outpatient or inpatient basis. You can receive specialist care after a referral from your health centre.
