Children and adolescents

When a newborn baby comes home from hospital, the family is visited by a nurse from the child healthcare service to make sure the baby is healthy. The parents can then take the child to the child health centre regularly to check that (s)he is developing properly. Sometimes the child health centre also runs courses for new parents.

At the child health centre the child’s vision, stature, weight and development are checked at regular intervals up to school age. There, the child also gets vaccinations against certain diseases. These checks and vaccinations are free of charge.

If, on the other hand, you want your child vaccinated against other diseases, for example if you are going abroad, you have to pay for it.

For a child who has started school, it is the school nurse who provides child health services, carry out health checks and give some vaccinations.

Youth clinics

If you are below the age of 23 and have any questions about relationships, contraceptives, your body, problems at home, trouble at school or anything else you need help with, you can contact your local youth clinic. A midwife, a medical social worker, a nurse and sometimes also a doctor work there.

Visits to youth clinics are free of charge.
